Background
On October 13, 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, carrying 45 passengers and crew, crashed into the remote Andes mountains. The plane was en route from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Santiago, Chile, with a stopover in Mendoza, Argentina. The passengers included a Uruguayan rugby team, their family members, and friends.
The Crash
The cause of the crash is still unknown, but it is believed that the plane flew into a storm and lost its bearings. The plane crashed at an altitude of approximately 13,000 feet, and many of the passengers were killed on impact. The survivors found themselves stranded in the harsh and unforgiving environment of the Andes mountains.
Survival
The survivors faced extreme conditions, including freezing temperatures, lack of food and water, and injuries. They were forced to resort to cannibalism to stay alive. After 72 days, 16 survivors were rescued by a Chilean Air Force helicopter.
